Recover · Self-custody means only you can restore your wallet
Recover Your Sei Wallet
If you've lost access to a wallet that holds your SEI — broken device, forgotten password, missing extension, sunsetted app — you can recover into Sei Wallet using your seed phrase, private key, or Ledger. The single rule of recovery: the seed phrase IS the wallet. We cannot recover lost seeds — only you can. Anyone with your seed phrase controls your funds. Anyone without it cannot, even if they have your password, your device, or your old wallet's database files.

Recovery scenarios
"I have my seed phrase but my old wallet app is gone"
The simplest case. Install Sei Wallet, choose "Import existing wallet → Use seed phrase", paste your 12 or 24 words. Done. This works regardless of which wallet you originally created the seed phrase in: Compass, Leap, Keplr, MetaMask (with Sei custom RPC), Trust Wallet, Backpack, or any other BIP-39 wallet. The seed phrase is a standard, not a wallet-specific format.
"I have my seed phrase but I don't remember my old password"
You don't need your old password. The password protected your wallet's local copy of the seed phrase; the seed phrase itself unlocks the chain. Install Sei Wallet, import the seed phrase, set a new local password.
"My device broke and I have my seed phrase"
Same as above. Install Sei Wallet on your new device, import the seed phrase. Your funds, stake, validators, and unbonds all appear because they're on-chain — not on your old device.
"I have a private key but no seed phrase"
Sei Wallet supports importing a single account from a raw private key. Choose Import existing wallet → Use private key. Note: this restores one account; a seed phrase restores all accounts derived from it. After importing the private key, consider generating a fresh seed-phrase wallet and moving funds to it — keys are easier to leak than seed phrases.
"I have a Ledger hardware wallet"
Plug in your Ledger, open the Ethereum or Cosmos app on the device, then in Sei Wallet choose Import existing wallet → Connect Ledger. Your accounts are derived from the device — no seed phrase ever leaves the Ledger. See /security for the full Ledger setup.
"I forgot my password and I don't have my seed phrase"
This is the hard case. There's no recovery without the seed phrase. Search any places you might have written it down: paper notebooks, password manager, encrypted files, safe deposit box, with a trusted family member. If your old device still works, the seed phrase may still be stored encrypted in the wallet's local data — extracting it is risky and rarely works. If none of those work, your funds are unrecoverable. We're sorry. This is the trade-off of self-custody — no one can take your funds from you, but no one can give them back either.
"I think someone has my seed phrase and I want to move funds"
Move now, fast. If your seed phrase has been compromised, anyone with it can spend your funds. Install Sei Wallet, generate a NEW seed phrase (do NOT import the compromised one), then send your funds from the old (compromised) address to the new address as quickly as possible. After the move, never use the old seed phrase again.
"I had Sei tokens at a sei1 address before SIP-3 and now they're gone"
They're not gone. SIP-3 changed how Sei works but didn't move any funds. Your sei1 address still holds the same tokens. The issue is that EVM-side tools and dApps don't show sei1 balances — only 0x balances. Use /migrate-cosmos-to-evm to associate them.
Safety during recovery
Recovery is when users get phished most often. A few specific safety rules:
- Verify the URL. seiwallet.net (the legitimate site). Not seiwallet.com, seiwallet.io, sei-wallet.net, or other variants.
- Verify the binary. If you downloaded Sei Wallet, check the signature against the public key at /security.
- Never enter your seed phrase into a website. Sei Wallet is a desktop application — the import flow happens locally on your device. If a website asks for your seed phrase, it's a phishing site.
- Never accept seed-phrase recovery help via DM. No legitimate wallet team will DM you asking for your seed phrase. We won't. Anyone who does is trying to steal your funds.
