Sei Wallet vs MetaMask: Which Is Best for Sei?

MetaMask is the wallet most crypto users already know. It works on Sei via custom RPC. Sei Wallet is built specifically for Sei. The honest answer: if you already use MetaMask for Ethereum and don't want to learn a new wallet, MetaMask is fine for Sei. If you want Sei-specific UX — staking, validator picker, address association — Sei Wallet is purpose-built.

When MetaMask is the better choice

For most users coming to Sei from the Ethereum ecosystem, MetaMask makes sense. Three reasons:

1. You already know it

MetaMask has 30M+ users globally. If you've ever used Uniswap, OpenSea, or any major Ethereum dApp, you've used MetaMask. The muscle memory is already there. Switching to a new wallet — even a better one — has a real cost. If your Sei usage is light or transactional, the switch may not be worth it.

2. Multi-chain EVM support

If you also use Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon, or any of the dozens of EVM chains MetaMask supports, you don't want to maintain a separate wallet just for Sei. Sei Wallet only supports Sei. If you're across 5+ EVM chains regularly, MetaMask is the right primary wallet.

3. Mobile

MetaMask has well-maintained iOS and Android apps. WalletConnect from mobile to desktop dApps works smoothly. Sei Wallet is desktop-only at launch. If mobile matters, MetaMask wins outright.

When Sei Wallet is the better choice

Sei Wallet wins on Sei-specific UX. If your Sei use is more than casual, these matter.

1. Built-in Sei staking with validator picker

Sei Wallet includes a native staking flow: browse validators sorted by uptime/commission/voting record, click Delegate, confirm. MetaMask does not include native staking for any chain — you'd connect to app.sei.io or a third-party staking interface. For users who actively manage their staking position, the built-in flow saves real friction. See Sei staking.

2. Address association for pre-SIP-3 holdings

Users who held SEI before the SIP-3 EVM transition may have funds sitting at a Cosmos legacy sei1 address. Sei Wallet has a built-in tool that walks you through associating sei1 with 0x on-chain. MetaMask is purely EVM — it can't see sei1 addresses. See how Sei works post-SIP-3.

3. Sei-curated dApp directory

Sei Wallet's built-in dApp browser has a curated list of Sei dApps: DragonSwap, Yei Finance, Citrex, and others. One-click connect. MetaMask works fine for these dApps but offers no Sei-specific affordance.

4. No telemetry

Sei Wallet does not collect telemetry by default. MetaMask collects some usage data by default (you can disable it in settings). ConsenSys is transparent about this in their privacy policy. If telemetry-free operation matters, Sei Wallet wins this dimension — see our security model.

The "use both" middle path

If you're already deep in MetaMask but want Sei-native features occasionally, you can use both wallets with the same seed phrase.

  1. Both wallets restore from the same BIP-39 seed phrase.
  2. Both will show the same 0x address and balance.
  3. Use MetaMask for general transactional use (and across other EVM chains).
  4. Use Sei Wallet specifically for: Sei staking, validator selection, sei1 address association, and the Sei-curated dApp directory.

The seed phrase is the source of truth. The wallets are just different windows into the same funds.

How to add Sei to MetaMask

If you decide MetaMask is the right choice, here's the setup:

  1. Open MetaMask → click the network dropdown at the top.
  2. Click Add networkAdd a network manually.
  3. Enter Sei's network parameters:
    • Network name: Sei
    • New RPC URL: https://evm-rpc.sei-apis.com
    • Chain ID: 1329
    • Currency symbol: SEI
    • Block explorer URL: https://seitrace.com
  4. Click Save.

For full setup including community-run RPCs and chain ID verification, see the Sei RPC configuration guide. After adding Sei, MetaMask will show your 0x address and any SEI balance.
