The Compass unstaking gotcha — and how to handle it

Compass users have reported unstaking their SEI and seeing their balance 'disappear.' The funds aren't gone — they're in the 21-day unbonding queue, which Compass shows poorly. Before May 28, 2026, you can complete the unstake from Compass or any Sei-compatible wallet. After May 28, you'll need a different wallet to track the unbonding.

The complaint

Compass App Store reviews include comments like:

"un staking problem I un staked and my balance got wiped for no reason... I waited for 20 days and my balance is still..." (Google Play review)
"I can no longer unstake my sei. Glad it wasn't much. Reached out to support through email and twitter and have not been helped." (App Store, 2-star review)

Compass support has acknowledged the issue: "This is a known bug on the mobile app and we are fixing this now."

The funds are not lost. They're in the unbonding queue, which is a chain-level state — not Compass-level. But Compass's UI doesn't always show the queue clearly.

What's actually happening

Sei staking works like every other Cosmos-style chain. When you stake SEI to a validator, the SEI is "delegated" — locked at the validator until you unstake. When you unstake, the protocol enters a 21-day unbonding period:

  1. Day 0: You click unstake. The chain marks your SEI as unbonding.
  2. Days 1-20: The SEI is in the unbonding queue. Not spendable, not earning rewards.
  3. Day 21: Unbonding completes. SEI returns to your spendable balance automatically.

The 21-day delay is a chain-protocol rule (it discourages slashing-evasion attacks). Every Cosmos-style chain has it.

Verifying your unbonding queue from outside Compass

Method 1 — block explorer (no wallet needed). Open seitrace.com, search for your address, look for "Delegations" / "Unbondings" sections. The unbonding queue lists each entry with a completion time. If you see your unbonding entry, your funds are safe.

Method 2 — import the seed into another wallet. Open Sei Wallet's Staking section after importing — the unbonding queue shows clearly with a countdown.

What to do before May 28

If unbonding completes BEFORE May 28: do nothing. Funds return automatically.

If unbonding completes AFTER May 28: the funds still complete unbonding — the chain doesn't care that Compass closed. To track post-May-28, either import your seed into Sei Wallet now, or use seitrace.com.

How to safely complete a stuck unstake

  1. Don't panic. Don't click unstake again. Don't initiate transfers.
  2. Check seitrace.com with your address. Look for the unbonding queue entry.
  3. If the unbonding is there: it's working. Wait, or import the seed into Sei Wallet for clarity.
  4. If the unbonding is NOT there: the unstake transaction may not have executed. Migrate your seed and retry from Sei Wallet.

The bigger picture

The Compass unstaking gotcha isn't a security failure or a fund loss. It's a UI display issue against a real chain-protocol delay. The right play is the same we recommend in the May 28 sunset summary: import your seed into Sei Wallet and verify state matches expectations.
